Supporting International Researchers

The University of Electro-Communications (UEC) provides support services for international researchers who stay in Japan for a medium-to-long-term upon request as a part of “internationalization of the University” which is one of our important strategies for international exchange. If UEC faculty members invite or hire international researchers, we can assist the faculty members and the international researchers to proceed with some necessary procedures.

Our support services can be provided the following eligible international researchers:

• New international researchers (including accompanying family member) who are coming to Japan from abroad to stay in Japan for a medium-to-long term
• New international researchers who are already in Japan and need to change their visa status or extend their period of stay to stay in Japan for a medium-to-long term
• International researchers who are currently working at UEC and need to change their visa status or extend their period of stay

Services

Support staff of the Office for International Strategy assists the international researchers to complete the following procedures:

Before coming to Japan

• Assist to obtain a “Certificate of Eligibility for Status of Residence (CoE)” to get an appropriate visa - including contact international researchers via email for preparation the CoE application (Only in Japanese and English are available)
• Apply for the CoE application at the Immigration Brueau
• Give the host faculty member an update on the CoE application progress
• Send the issued CoE to the international researchers
• Provide the information of necessary on-and off-campus procedures

Note：Accommodation for new international researchers should be arranged by host faculty member or host laboratory. The Office for International Strategy only can provide the information through the website.

After arrival in Japan

• Address registration at local municipal office
• Enroll in Japanese National Health Insurance
• Open a bank account
• Support UEC employment procedure – support to complete paperwork
• Assist immigration issues -provide necessary information and support preparation of application form (Note: International researchers are required to go to the Immigration Bureau by themselves when applying visa extension/changing visa status.)
• Support necessary procedures while their stay in Japan
• Provide information of Japanese language class run by CIPE
