Report : Inauguration Ceremony of the UCREC Sino-Japanese International Joint Research Center Held at Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology

A new hub of the UEC China Research and Education Center (UCREC), one of the international collaboration bases of the University of Electro-Communications (UEC), has been established at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences. On March 10, 2025, the inauguration ceremony for the "Sino-Japanese International Joint Research Center for Human-Machine Interaction and Rehabilitation" was held. Representing UEC at the event were Vice President Kazuto Masamoto (in charge of globalization・Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering, Professor), UCREC Director Hiroshi Yokoi, and Deputy Director Yinlai Jiang.

SIAT, located in Shenzhen, often referred to as China's Silicon Valley, is a world-class research institution founded in 2006 through a tripartite collaboration among the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shenzhen municipal government, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

During the ceremony, Consul General Yoshiko Kishima from the Consulate-General of Japan in Guangzhou gave an overview of the current state of Sino-Japanese academic exchanges. Additionally, SIAT's Party Secretary and Vice President Chuangzhi Wu, along with Prof. Guanglin Li, Director of the Institute of Biomedical and Health Engineering, delivered remarks on joint research with UEC.

Vice President Masamoto introduced UEC's international collaboration initiatives and research activities, while Director Yokoi highlighted that SIAT Assoc. Prof. Xu Yong and Assoc. Prof. Xiobei Jing are alumni of UEC. He also introduced the international exchange agreement signed last September and provided an overview of UEC's research on human-machine interfaces.

The ceremony also featured demonstrations of the latest prosthetic hands and assistive devices developed at SIAT. In the afternoon session, Professor Masamoto delivered a keynote lecture on brain blood flow mechanisms related to dementia prevention, followed by an engaging Q&A session.

Through the inauguration ceremony, discussions were held to further develop collaborative research, deepening academic exchanges between the two institutions.
